Meet the mum-of-two addicted to pole dancing

[Elsa Williamson | Cleethorpes People]

A FEW years ago, if you mentioned pole dancing, many people would conjure up images of scantily-clad women and ogling.

Well that has all changed as Pole Dancing has come a long way and evolved into a sport encompassing the power and agility of athletes with artistic gymnastics, physical ability and self-expression thrown in.

And a Cleethorpes woman would recommend this physically demanding way of keeping fit to anyone.

Cleethorpes People caught up with mother of two, Dianne Matheson, of Beeley Road, who absolutely loves it!

“The confidence it gives you is amazing, its a lot of fun and everyone including the instructor is so friendly.

At SoMa's San Francisco Pole & Dance, Art, Dance & Competition Collide

“You are seeing this explosive growth in people that are interested in focusing more on the artistic side of creating art through their dance,”

If you're looking for a place to acquire or hone pole dancing skills for fun, work or fitness, look no further than San Francisco Pole & Dance at 301 8th St.

Last month, the pole dancing studio-formerly Studio Botan-changed hands, names and focus. With pole dancing instructor Amy Bond now at the helm, the studio now aims to pay its respects to the traditions of art and dance, and the effect they've had on the evolution of pole dancing as a competitive sport.

“You are seeing this explosive growth in people that are interested in focusing more on the artistic side of creating art through their dance,” said Bond, a practicing lawyer who's been dancing for five and a half years, and plans to continue her legal work while running the studio. “I love that I get nourished by the work that I do and the people that I work with,” she said.

Classes at SF Pole & Dance are taught by competitive pole dancers and performers from Bond's personal and professional repertoire. She also hopes to roll out new class offerings, such as gymnastics, hip-hop and classic ballet, to complement the pole work.

“The one thing all new students should know is, you don't have to have great upper body strength to do pole: that's how you get upper body strength. I think that is the big misnomer, that pole dancers are so strong-we became strong by doing pole dancing,” says Bond.

Streaming: The Future of Fitness?

[Mallory Schlossberg | Business Insider]

Boutique fitness is notoriously expensive.

Even though they have made wellness trendy, pay-per-class workouts like Flywheel and Barry's Bootcamp are often criticized for their lofty price tags (and inherent elitism).

(The cycling studio SoulCycle often gets the brunt of this criticism even though its pricing is par for the course in New York).

But celebrity trainer Anna Kaiser - who has trained Sarah Jessica Parker, Kelly Ripa, and Sofia Vergara and who runs the boutique studio AKT inMotion - doesn't believe that this kind of à la carte fitness needs to be limited to people who live near prime studios and have big budgets.

I think what's happening in the streaming environment is what's happening in the boutique environment.

She has launched a streaming membership program that gives members access to all of her workouts for $50 a month. That's pricier than a Planet Fitness membership but is certainly a step in the direction of making luxurious classes available to all (minus the fancy shampoo and spa-like bathrooms).

In New York City, those classes would cost you nearly $40 each.

Villency Design GroupPeloton gives people lots of different indoor cycling classes - in their own homes.

Working out in the comfort of one's own home isn't a new concept; if you think about it, the popular workout videos of the 1980s (Jane Fonda anyone?) along with Tae Bo made home workouts more than just a run around the block.

But streaming allows the fitness fiend to consistently change up workouts, allowing for more variety than a DVD. Streaming, for instance, is the center point of Beachbody on Demand (which is home to famed workouts like Insanity and 21 Day Fix).

Pole Dancing Classes: A Pro Talks About This New Way to Get Fit

[ | CheatSheet]

Actually, now that I'm in my 40s, I'm in better shape that I ever was in all my years of dancing, and I attribute that all to pole dancing.

Sticking to a routine almost guarantees a smoother, more organized day. When it comes to hitting the gym, this strategy isn't quite so effective. Going through the same motions is a guaranteed way to get really bored with exercise and stall your results. This is why classes are a great way to get fit. Only the instructor knows what's coming next, which keeps your mind and body guessing the whole time. While you have plenty of options to choose from, you might want to give pole dancing classes a more serious look.

Though pole dancing classes are becoming more common, they still seem a little exotic to most fitness buffs. Even we felt a little mystified by this unique way to get in shape, so we chatted with Michelle Abbruzzese, fitness trainer and owner of Work It Dance and Fitness in Norwalk, Conn. A lifelong dancer with experience performing for professional sports teams, she knows a few things about staying fit. Abbruzzese revealed just how tough pole dancing can be and why men should seriously consider trying it out. Hear more of what she had to say in this condensed version of our conversation.

Plus-size pole dancer hits back at fat shamers saying her body's never been better since taking up the sport

[REBECCA LEWIS | MAILONLINE]

A plus-size pole dancer who twerks upside down hopes to inspire other larger-than-life ladies to take up the sport.

New Yorker Michelle Mesch, 27, started pole dancing to get fit in September 2015, and says it makes her feel 'sexy and free'.

Thrilled with her new-found confidence, she began documenting her success on Instagram, posing in skimpy outfits.

But she has been met with some cruel comments from anonymous trolls.

“Strangers will judge you about why you're not losing weight.” Michelle said.

'Then the minute I posted the video of me on the pole I got lots of the crying with laughter emoji and comments saying that I shouldn't be up there.

'I couldn't win – I was trying to get healthy and change my lifestyle but they were still making fun of me.'
