Pole instructor slammed by child psychologist for offering classes to ages 8+
[Joanne Web | Mirror UK]
"I just want people to be open minded rather than being negative about it - pole fitness is not sexual."
A pole dancing club has been slammed by a top child psychologist for giving classes to kids as young as eight.
Pole Intentions encourages youngsters to perform a variety of moves on poles.
The owners say they want to remove the stigma which surrounds the exercise and say it isn't sexual but helps the kids gain confidence instead.
But child psychologist Emma Kenny says even the idea of it is horrendous and only a certain type of man would enjoy watching young girls on a pole.
She said: "I think it is primarily female focused which immediately defines that it is about a women's body and how she looks and less about exercise.
"For me it also provides a certain amount of discomfort because I think the only people who are really going to enjoy watching little girls pole dance, apart from their incredibly proud parents, is a particular type of man.

Zoe Hardy, who runs the pole fitness classes to kids as young as eight
"Kids shouldn't be dancing around a pole - go to a class where they can learn acrobatics and do something where the definition of it has no sexual connotation."
Zoe Hardy, 33, runs the weekly group for eight years plus in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, with her twin sister Kelly.
She says the classes are a fun way to work out and is just a different type of exercise.
The mother-of-two said: "Many people still associate pole dancing with seedy strip clubs which is why we call it pole fitness.
"I just want people to be open minded rather than being negative about it - pole fitness is not sexual.
"We have had one or two bad comments saying 'children pole dancing - that's disgusting' but if you actually watch the performances, it is a really beautiful piece.
"You can see how hard these girls worked and if you take the poles out and look at it like a dance piece - it is amazing."

Want to Build Confidence? Take a Pole-Dancing Fitness Class
[Amy Marturana | Yahoo Health]
It takes a huge amount of body awareness to hoist yourself onto a pole, swing around it, and land gracefully back on two feet. That -- plus coordination and a whole lot of of strength.
Pole dancing is a killer workout for your body -- it produces long, lean dancer muscles. But paired with the sensual hip movements, the muscle-toning benefits take a backseat to its self-confidence transforming effects. And it only takes one class.
Building confidence in a mindful way is at the heart of City Pole, a new holistic pole fitness studio in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City. Founder and CEO Kylee Sallak created the studio with a certain philosophy in mind, based off what she calls the "five pillars of confidence." Written on the studio wall so students and instructors can keep them top of mind, the pillars are: primal power (the power of moving your hips), mindful motion, poised posture, gaze with intent, and mindful sensuality. The goal in class is to practice all of these -- and then hopefully, apply them to your everyday life.
"For many people, pole fitness is new," Sallak tells Yahoo Health. "It's really about bringing awareness to your thought process, and feeling empowered by the movements your body is making."
Expressing sensuality can be tough for many people (Sallak notes her classes are about 90 percent women). "It really runs the gamut from women who are naturally comfortable being sensual, and women who are exceptionally rigid and uncomfortable, and everybody in between." By creating a safe, supportive environment, with encouraging instructors and intimate classes of no more than five people, Sallak sees a lot of growth and change -- women let go of the guilt or insecurity they feel swinging their hips, and instead, harness the power of moving with purpose and truly owning it.

Another hugely empowering aspect of pole fitness is how quickly you notice progress compared to other types of workouts. "You go to the gym and you wait for results, and you don't see it, so a lot of people get frustrated and give up before anything happens," Sallak says. "Pole fitness progression is so fast because you're actually able to see your body making these shapes and doing these tricks and spins and holds, in your first class, that you just did not think you were capable of doing." That instant success gives a powerful shot to your confidence.
And this feeling of accomplishment doesn't end with your first class. Wendy Traskos, founder of NY Pole Dancing, a studio in Hell's Kitchen, says she still notices the changes in herself after years of practicing. "I am almost 45 and I have been pole dancing for over a decade, and still surprise myself with what I am able to accomplish on the pole," she says. "In pole dancing, you will find you are stronger and more beautiful than you ever thought."
Then, there are the physical changes: not building muscles or losing weight -- although both can certainly be achieved with regular pole dancing -- but changes in the way people carry themselves. "I have seen women walk into NY Pole Dancing very timid, shy, insecure, and looking almost frightened," Traskos says. "Many of those women, later, I barely recognize them. They walk with good posture, and are more outgoing and focused on their career goals." She's even had many professional business women confess that pole dancing has made them more assertive, confident, and happy at work.

'Breasties' boost health with pole dancing, Latin ballroom classes and dragon boating
[Danielle Cetinski | Central Western Daily]
"It's a wonderful support and it gets us all together…"
Pole dancing, Latin ballroom classes and dragon boating might be on the list of more exotic sporting activities, but for a cancer support group during the coming weeks, they will play an integral role in keeping them healthy.
The group, which affectionately calls itself 'the breasties', is made up of younger cancer patients undergoing treatment and meets for coffee regularly for support and to share things that are working for them.
Occasionally health professionals also attend to provide advice outside a formal consult environment.
But during the next two months, McGrath Foundation breast care nurse Sue Kuter has also organised a series of exercise classes in yoga and pilates, pole dancing, Latin dancing and dragon boating to boost their health.
She pointed to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, which found exercise reduced mortality rates in breast cancer survivors by half.
"During treatment, the women lose tone and they suffer from fatigue and they stop exercising because they don't have a lot of energy and moving can reduce the intensity of the aches and pains the medication can cause," she said.
"There's one lady with metastatic disease who can't wait to get into her spandex."
Mrs Kuter said women did not need to undertake high intensity training like marathon running and simple activity worked.
Support group members Meagan Johnsen, Michelle Vaughan and Cathy Clark said they enjoyed the regular catch-up.
"It makes you realise you're not the only person going through it," Ms Clark said.
"It's a wonderful support and it gets us all together – Sue does a great job," Ms Johnsen said.

Honolulu Magazine tries pole dancing
7 Things first timers should know before pole dancing.
[Katrina Valcourt & Brittney Nitta-Lee | Honolulu Magazine]
Let’s get this straight: pole dancing has a bad connotation, but it’s not just about stripping. It can be, but pole dancing can also be an excellent way to tone your body, gain strength and bring out your feminine side all in one workout. We sent web producer Brittney Nitta-Lee and associate editor Katrina Valcourt to an intro class at Fit for a Goddess to see how they liked it.
Right off the bat, we can tell you that pole dancing, or pole fitness, does not have to be sexual. But at Fit for a Goddess, you’re encouraged to express your sexuality as a form of female empowerment.
The class, led by owner Gina Ogitani and two other “goddess guides,” Jamie Ernestberg and Danielle Gosiaco, started out with everyone sitting in a circle and saying their names, how they heard about the studio and an interesting fact about themselves, to help us get to know and feel safe with each other. Then we went through a series of stretches to warm up, practicing graceful movements and some cheeky stuff, too. After a quick break, we launched into our “goddess glides”—walking in imaginary high heels with good posture and a bit of swag.
Three girls shared each pole for some basic moves: goddess gliding with one hand on the pole, doing some sexy turns, followed by some moves against the wall. We returned to the pole to finish with the “butterfly,” where you cross one leg over the pole, tuck the other behind, reach up high and swing around and down.
